That’s right. I said it. Old school. I kicked it old school style tonight.
Brian Reese brought back some of the absolutely best tasting red snapper ever today (more on how he doesn’t deserve points for catching 48 fish last weekend at a later posting). I can’t imagine anything better than blackened red snapper. And thanks to Brian, Kristen and I had some after the kids went to bed.
Kristen made spicy cheese grits- hows that for old school in the dirty south? And I busted out a cast iron skillet that is now on its third generation of cooking. Yep, that bad boy right up there has been making fried chicken and cornbread (and now fish) in my family for generations. And anyone who knows anything knows you can’t blacken fish without a cast iron skillet. So out it came. I went old school with cast iron on an open flame grill. It was amazing!
What else is better when you go old school?
Oh yea, Brian, you’ve earned your blog link back with this love gift of fish.

We love to ‘go old-school’ with air-popped popcorn in a pot on the stove! Nothing is more of a tradition in the Pringle household than popcorn… started our marriage with the microwave bags, then ‘got healthy’ when the children came along. We started getting the corn kernels at the Native Sun- using an air-popper thingie… then, one evening Seth asked about how we ‘did this’ when we were kids… Dustin was on it,-like white on popcorn! It’s been a FamFavorite ever since! Nothin’ like kickin’ it ‘old-school’!
I can’ty get the fmaliy to like ari-popped popcorn, but they do like the FUN of JIFFY - POP popcorn. Talk abouit old school - as a kid we’d pop it on the stove and would wait in anticipation for the “turban” to expand and BAM - instant popcorn. Pre-microwave days…. Anyway, the kids like it and it’s a lot of FUN still. I’m sure it’s loaded with unhealthy stuff, but it’s worth it if I can get two teenagers and parents to do something together!
I also can’t type! I finally figured out how to change the microscopic font to something along the lines of “braiile”, now I can see how many typos I made! OOPS! I’m not a bad speller, I was a spelling bee champ in elementary school.
Dude, my dad doesn’t use anything to cook (other than the grill) but cast iron:) For xmas last year, they gave us two (new, not cool like yours) pans and we’ve been using them ever since. I make grits too, but make them “west coast” by adding rosemary:) Looking forward to seeing ya’ll soon!
